Waste is a problem that has grown around the world because we live in a society that has become used to using and throwing plastic, cans and glass here and there, which can take many years even centuries – to decompose.
What to do With the Garbage?
In the farm we have several simple possibilities to contribute to avoid the pollution generated by the garbage:
- Reduce: is to avoid the excessive use of packaging, like plastic bags. In grandparents’ time, things were packed in wrappers of banana leaves or in wooden boxes and baskets of cane, wicker, or palm fibers were used more.
- Reuse: it is about cleaning the containers of glass, plastic or metal and to use them again. Never use food storage containers that have had chemicals or poisons. A few ways to use toys like a plastic Frisbee can be used as a bird feeder. Old Popsicle sticks can be used for crafts and art projects. Some old milk cartons and plastic containers can be used for storage of small items like beads and small pins and buttons. Foil can be reused for insulation around the home, or as a light reflector. Things like wire hangers can be used for wreathes, holiday decorations, plant hangers and marshmallow holders. Lastly food can be used as a mixture base for compost.
- Recycle: we can use old products to make new ones. Plastic containers can be reused by cutting them into containers, seedbeds or containers for storing objects. Fruit crates lined with plastic inside can also be seed beds.
- Recover: is to use waste as fuel to heat the chimney or cook. It can be made with newspapers, paper bags, cardboard boxes, fruit compote wood, old and worn furniture.
How to Recycle the Waste Materials
Recycling should be a major part of every individuals and every company’s standard practice. Without the action of recycling there will not be enough natural resources left on this planet. Recycling waste material is a great opportunity to reuse waste to create new things. Waste can be turned into usable products.
Separation of waste
In order to make a good use of the rubbish of the farm we must be clear about its origin and future possibilities. Garbage is divided into two major groups:
Organic garbage: husks, leftover food, wood, paper, cardboard and crop residues such as bagasse, coffee pulp, bean pods, among others.
Inorganic garbage: glasses, plastics, metal and residues of paints, solvents and insecticides.
All these wastes prey on the farm converted into fertilizer or as in the case of paper, wood and cardboard production fire.
Since this garbage can not be returned to the soil in the form of manure, we must separate it and store it clean to give it new uses within the farm or hand it over to a recycling company.
The simplest separation is as follows:
Glass: bottles, glass containers.
Plastics: bags, food wrappings and containers of household items.
Metal: packaging of canned, cans of soda, containers of oil and fuels. Old objects like keys, padlocks, tools, decaying pots.
Others: plastic foam, batteries.
Waste oil, paint, solvents, insecticides, aerosol containers, should be kept closed and as far as possible be taken to the municipal garbage dump, as they are hazardous waste. They should not be burned or buried since they contaminate the soil, water and air.
Conclusion
Everything can be used for something else, recycling is a necessity and all things like, plastic, paper, steel, aluminum and even batteries can be made to have new life which can be used for crafts, storage and wearable products.
