What Are Metal Detectors
If you are into this hobby, I am sure you already know what a metal detector is but just in case if you are new to all this stuff, it is a good idea to start from the basics.
A metal detector is an electronic device (normally portable) which is used to locate metal underground. This is done magnetically. It can be used to find any metal ranging from coins to jewellery to relics and even gold.
Since you don’t have any idea as to what you will find, this keeps the interest and this is why a lot of people are into this hobby. It is a hobby of a lot of people. You just need a metal detector, spare time and you are all set up finding metal.
What’s better than finding hidden treasure or coins when you are out spending time with your family? This is one hobby that’s equally great for the entire family. All you guys need is a metal detector or maybe two and that’s all.
How a Metal Detector Works
how metal detector workAll the metal detectors work on the principle of electromagnetic. It creates a magnetic field. This magnetic field penetrates in the ground or underwater. Metals get charged when they enter the magnetic field. As soon as a metal is charged, the detector gets a signal and this is where the user is notified that there is metal underground or in water.
You are only notified (by sound) about the presence of metal, and then you have to dig and find the metal. There are metal detectors that will tell you what type of metal they have detected like gold or silver, but these are sophisticated metal detectors.
Generally, you will only get a beep or sound with no clue of which type of metal it is. There are specific metal detectors available in the market that are used to find specific metals like gold, so if you need a particular detector, that’s possible too.
Parts of a Metal Detector
Let’s dive into a bit technical stuff.
Having love for detecting metals will become more fun if you will be able to know the functions of different parts of a metal detector.
All the metal detectors have four parts.
- Control box
As the name shows, it is used to stabilize the detector. It has the responsibility of keeping the entire unit stable throughout the search process.
This is the main part of the metal detector. It is said to be the brain of any detector. It contains all the circuits, speakers, batteries, processor and everything else.
It connects the search coil to the control box.
Coil or Search Coil
This is the most crucial part of any metal detector as this coil is responsible for detecting the metal. You have to move this coil on the ground or any other place to detect metal.
Type of Metal Detector
Metal detectors have three main types. These three types are based on the technology that they use to detect metal. These include; Pulse Induction (PI), Beat Frequency Oscillation (BFO), and Very Low Frequency (VLF).
Pulse Induction (PI)
PI metal detectors use one coil which acts as the transmitter as well as the receiver. The electric signals are created by pulse induction which passes through the coil making it magnetized. These electric bursts end reversing the polarity of the magnetic field which creates a spike. This electric spike runs through the coil again. Based on these electric bursts and spike, the detector detects different types of metals.
When these electric bursts strike a metal, the reverse magnetic field takes a longer period to disappear the reflected pulse. This creates an echo, and this is how metals are detected.
Beat Frequency Oscillation (BFO)
This is the core technology which uses two coils of different sizes. The large coil is used to detect metal. Both the coils are connected to an oscillator that generates thousands of electric pulses continuously. The receiver in the control box monitors the waves which are generated by coils when pulses passed through them.
When a metal comes in contact within these radio waves, the frequency of the large coil changes which is monitored by the receiver in the control box and it thus shows that metal is found.
This is an inexpensive technology and metal detectors using BFO technology are fairly cheap.
Very Low Frequency (VLF)
VLF or Induction Balance (IB) is a more current technology which uses two coils. One coil acts as a receiver and the other as a transmitter. The transmitter transmits electricity which creates a magnetic field. Any metal object that comes into the magnetic field is picked up by the receiver (coil) by variation in the frequency.
VLF metal detectors can detect the type and size of the metal by Phase Shifting. It uses conductivity of the metal to create longer or shorter phase shifts.
VLF metal detectors are best at finding different metal types.
Factors to Consider When Finding the Best Metal Detector
When buying a metal detector, there are quite a few factors that you should look for.
How often you want to use the metal detector? Where you intend to use it, in the water, on the beach or in the woods? Do you want to find gold or any specific metal from the detector?
Based on the usage, choose the right detector. The first thing is to ask yourself why you need a metal detector and what you want to achieve from it.
If you a beginner, it is a good idea to choose a basic metal detector because being new to this hobby, you won’t be able to figure out what exactly are your needs.
What is your budget? Most of the metal detectors in the market are relatively inexpensive so you won’t have any issue buying one.
However, a metal detector is useless if you don’t buy supporting items such as a headphone, digging tools and other add-ons. Adding these tools on the list will definitely push the price up.
Accuracy and Depth
These are the two most crucial variables. Beginners normally don’t have to worry a lot about depth and accuracy, but if you have been into this hobby for some time, you should choose a metal detector with good accuracy and decent depth so that you can detect metals easily.
Ease of Use
This is definitely a feature that beginners should look for. Most of the metal detectors are fairly easy-to-use so that it won’t be an issue.
However, if you are buying a metal detector for a teen or a 10-year-old, make sure that it has an easy control system so that the kid can use it.
