8.Gerber 01471 Suspension Butterfly Opening Multitool
The Gerber 01471 Suspension Butterfly Opening Multitool comes with 11 tools built-in and has a streamlined design which is very comfortable to hold and use. The overall length is 6.5 inches while the closed length is 4 inches. So this multitool is definitely not considered a compact multitool but the closed length makes it easy enough to carry in your pocket. Considering this multitool’s length, it is rather light at 6.7 ounces and not bulky at all, however when the tool is opened for plier use, the grip is wide, partly due to the spring loaded pliers which are really solid and the spring loaded pliers are great. But due to the width of the open multitool, smaller hands might find it uncomfortable to use the pliers. It is made from good quality metal and has a nice gunmetal finish to it. This multitool has the Gerber Saf.T.Plus locking system which locks the tools in place for safety and that is really nice if you’ve ever experienced a knife on a multitool close on you while using it.
The craftsmanship on the Gerber 01471 Suspension Butterfly Opening Multitool is solid and the design is very comfortable to use. The tools included in this multitool are the needle-nose pliers, wire cutter, wire crimper, bottle opener, a flat edge knife, a serrated knife, Phillips screwdriver, small and medium flat screwdrivers and a small pair of scissors. Although the scissors are very small and almost seem useless because the cutting surface is so small. Also, the knife blades are both under 2 inches in length. That isn’t so bad for the fine edge blade but makes the serrated blade useless when it comes to sawing anything thicker than an inch in diameter. Also, this multitool does not come with a file. Just thought you should know in case that is important to you because a file is generally a standard tool found in most multitools.
This multitool comes with a nylon sheath which does the job. It may sound like I am being harsh about the faults on this multitool but i’m just trying to point out things I didn’t like. Overall I think this is a great multitool. It’s solid, very well designed and the spring loading of the tools works great, as well as the safety locking system is a welcome feature. So you get easy deployment of tools with the spring loading and you get safety locking of the tools for when you use them. Amazon has this multitool for under $30 at the time of this review and you can’t beat this multitool at this price that’s for sure.
9.Leatherman 830246 Wave Multitool
The Leatherman 830246 Wave Multitool is the Black Oxide version and it is one sexy multitool. What’s best depends on your preferences and your needs so no one multitool can really be considered the best. But if you were forced to call one single multitool the best, this has to come the closest. Leatherman quality as always is top of the line. This multitool comes with 2 knife blades, a serrated blade and fine edge blade, both made from 420HC Steel. Both blades are outside accessible for easy use of the knife blades without having to open the multitool. That is a very nice thing to have in a multitool, especially if it is replacing a pocket knife. The Wave Multitool is 4 inches when closed and 6 inches in length when open. This multitool is solid and tough and weighs 8.5 ounces because of that.
The Wave has 17 functions and comes with the following tools; Regular Pliers, Needlenose Pliers, Large Screwdriver, Large Bit Driver, Small Bit Driver, Wire Cutters, Hard-Wire Cutters, Wire Strippers, Scissors, Metal/Wood File, Saw, Diamond Coated File, Serrated Knife, Fine Edge Knife, Bottle Opener, Can Opener and a Ruler. It comes with a Phillips Head bit and a Flat Head screwdriver bit. The craftsmanship is awesome and very durable. The one thing that happened to me that wasn’t so great was the black residue from the finish on the multitool came off on to my hands and clothes. I wiped it down with a cloth and some WD-40 for a few minutes, and it was good to go. Not sure if this is going to happen to you, but I just wanted to give fair warning.
Overall this multitool just feels right. It is built without feeling crowded and although it’s not a small multitool it doesn’t seem bulky. Everything just fits right. Having access to the knives on the outside without having to open the multitool is great and having a separate saw so that you don’t have to wear out the serrated knife blade is great. It’s a true saw with saw teeth. This is a quality multitool at a great price. It has a lot of tools and is very functional in a lot of situations. I love this multitool as a do it all multitool or what they like to call and EDC (every day carry) multitool. If you get this multitool you won’t be disappointed that’s for sure.
10.SOG S66-N Power Assist Multitool
The SOG S66-N Power Assist Multitool is a great quality multitool. The S66-N has SOG’s Power Assist technology which is actually gear driven. Power Assist allows easy opening of blades as well as the one-handed opening of the tool, but best of all it gives you leverage when using the pliers and wire cutting tools. SOG Power Assist blows away all other multitools when it comes to the power you get with the wire cutters and pliers. SOG claims their Power Assist technology gives the pliers twice the power of normal multitool pliers, and once you use these pliers, you will agree with their claim. It’s just an awesome design for multitools. The S66-N comes with two different knife blades, a serrated blade, and a straight edge knife blade. Both blades have spring assisted opening which makes one-handed opening the easiest you have ever seen. This is as close to a switch blade as you can get while still being legal. All blades lock into the open position for your safety. But one of the best things about the SOG S66-N multitool is that you can buy and install individual tools to customize the multitool to your liking. The S66-N weighs 9.3 ounces so you probably won’t be carrying this multitool in your pocket unless you want people to think that you’re happy to see them all the time.
One thing that is a little weird is that this multitool does not come with a saw, but as I mentioned before, you can buy the tools you want and swap them out to customize the SOG S66-N Multitool.
This multitool comes with a nylon carrying pouch which only gives you one mounting option, vertically attached to your belt. If you want more mounting options, then you will have to buy a different sheath or pouch. The knife blade sharpens easily if you have the right sharpener. I like to keep a Pocket Multifunction Sharpener in my pocket most of the time. It works great for my multitools, pocket knives, and survival knives. Two things that make the SOG S66-N Multitool awesome are, the ability to swap out tools to customize the multitool to your liking and the Power Assist technology that makes the pliers doubly strong as regular pliers. It makes me feel like Popeye after eating my spinach when I use these pliers.
11.SOG Black Oxide B61-N Multitool
The SOG Black Oxide B61-N Multitool is a very hefty, durable multitool which for its size doesn’t feel too heavy at 9.6 ounces. If you have other multitools including Leatherman multitools, the one thing you will notice about the B61-N multitool is how smooth it is. Opening and closing this multitool is just smooth. Other multitools feel clunky in comparison. The other thing the SOG B61-N excels in is the strength of the pliers. The plier tool is sturdy, and the B61-N comes with SOG’s Compound Leverage Technology that uses gears to allow you to get more pressure on the pliers. SOG claims that their pliers are twice as strong as other multitools. I don’t know if it is twice as strong but there is no doubt that SOG has the strongest plier tools with the Compound Leverage Technology they use in their multitools. The B61-N is Military Grade Steel all the way. The SOG B61-N only comes with one knife which has a half-serrated blade. I am not a fan of blades that waste half of my usable cutting edge with serrations. I prefer having a separate serrated blade in my multitool. Luckily you can remove and change out tools by purchasing the ones you want directly from SOG.
This multitool has a few EOD specific features like a variety of crimpers and with the higher leverage ratio on the SOG multitools, you can literally cut through a quarter. The handles are comfortable but this is a pretty big multitool so if you have small hands you may not like holding this multitool for extended periods of time. The B61-N comes with the half-serrated knife, a V-cutter which can cut through a seatbelt, a 1.4 inch driver which actually takes standard sockets, a variety of crimpers, a small pair of scissors which are a little uncomfortable to use because of the handles and a Saw. The SOG B61-N is GSA approved. If you need a heavy-duty multitool and plier/cutter strength are important to you, and you don’t mind the size of a beefy multitool, then you should consider the SOG B61-N or any of the SOG multitools that have the Compound Leverage Technology.
The one downside to this multitool is that the inner tools are not the easiest to open. Compared to how smooth everything else is with this multitool it’s a little disappointing. The SOG line of multitools are just solid workhorses so they won’t dazzle you with nice curved handles or a flashy look, but they will get any job done without worry of snapping the tool. These are the toughest multitools out there.
